Anambra: NULGE splits

Crisis rocks the Anambra state chapter of  Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), as the National body of the union on Wednesday, inaugurated a seven-man Caretaker Committee charged to conduct election within the maximum period of six months.

The new committee led by  Mr Val. Onuora as chairman, Mrs Chinyere Obiazi, Secretary and others were equally urged by the Acting National Caretaker Chairman of the union, Mr Nankpak Njomiri, to avoid sit-tight, and quickly kick-start the process that will lead to election in line with NULGE constitution.

Njomiri, who recalled that the National Industrial Court sitting in Owerri on July 11 ruled that tenure elongation was a nullity, explained that executive councils that have outstayed their legitimate two  tenures like Anambra have no business remaining in office.

“Our constitution is what binds us together and says where election cannot be held, a caretaker committee should be put in places to oversee the affairs and conduct election within three months.
” As you take over the mantle of leadership in Anambra do not exhibit that character of sit-tight syndrome but organise election as soon as possible, so that people will see do something unique,” he warned.

In an acceptance speech, Mr Val. Onuora, assured that the committee would work within the armpit of law and terms of reference within the given time.
But reacting in a text message, Mr Jerry Nnubia, the Anambra State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who doubles as NULGE state chairman, denied knowledge of the inauguration of caretaker committee, describing it as an illegality.
