Second diocese of Anglican Communion, Northern Province, yesterday, warned politicians against any tendency to divide Nigeria along religious, tribal or sectional interests, saying the size of the country remained its strength.
The Communion made the announcement through Bishop of Wusasa Diocese and Arch Bishop-elect of Kaduna Province, Most Reverend (Dr) Ali Buba Lamido, while speaking at the 20th anniversary of the diocese, with the theme; “Rejoice in the Lord Always” held at Saint Bartholomew’s Cathedral Church, Wusasa in Zaria local government of Kaduna state.
He affirmed that the national integration depended on the political class of the country Lamido pointed out that the country has been extremely polarised along sectional and tribal lines “to the extend the white on the national flag which signified unity now makes no sense”, adding that at every discussion there were sectional undertones.
The Arch Bishop-elect warned that “disintegration will not solve our problem but would rather worsen it,” saying that the problem could only be solved through national conference.
“If national conference is convened, critical issues that concern all Nigerians can be discussed and major issues addressed.
“There are those who are opposed to restructuring and think that we should emphasise what keeps us together, rather than what divides us, we feel that there should be a point of convergence.
“We should put Nigeria ahead of our individualistic and primordial interests,” he explained.
While commending Kaduna State Government’s effort to provide portable water and construction or maintenance of roads in the State, he urged that move should be extended to health and education sectors as well as job creation.
Most Reverend Lamido frowned at the plan to sack over 22,000 public primary school teachers across the state.
The man of God advised the state government to train and retrain the teachers instead of sacking them as the plan would subject many families to serious difficulties and hardship, considering the economic situation.
He advised the state government to intensify surveillance on the Abuja-Kaduna and Kaduna-Birnin Gwari road to stamp out insecurity along these routes, saying cases of kidnapping have become the order of the day on these roads.
