Another tanker guts fire at Onitsha, two weeks after


Two weeks after a tanker felled into a ditch and gutted fire at  major parts of Onitsha, the commercial nerve of Anambra state, another tanker on Wednesday, crashed into a gutter due to break failure.


Blueprint reports that the tanker which was conveying PMS to Enugu fell into a ditch along Onitsha/Enugu expressway by Chipex Filling station, close to Army gate and few kilometers away to Upper-Iweke, Onitsha the scene of the fire incident that occurred last two weeks Wednesday.


“The PMS is spilling out at the time of making this report. It is highly advisable you alert residents in the  Area through your medium to stay clear from the premises in order to prevent any disaster,” an eye witness, simply identified as Ijeoma Uche, stated.


The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Anambra state command, SP Haruna Muhammed, said the Police patrol teams have cordoned off the area and arrested the driver.
Muhammed added that the Commissioner of Police, CP John B. Abang, was also at the scene where the tanker crashed into the gutter for on the spot assessment.
The State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Andrew Kumapayi, through the Public Relations Officer of the command, Paschal Anigbo, disclosed that the fire incident occurred at 1.05pm.


“It happened around Oando filling station before APAMS Office. The tanker is with registration number of EFR 561Zq WTH IK. 2 male adult were involved.
“The driver air hose pulled off and the vehicle started rolling back (jack knife). The area has been condoned. Traffic has been diverted. Fire service was on ground and neutralizing the PMS that is dropping. The driver has been taken away by the police.


“According to the driver he loaded from Lagos and heading to Enugu. The product the vehicle is conveying is PMS (33000 Litres). The FRSC, Police, NSCDC and the military men are on ground to curtail the situation,” he noted.
