An Islamic body, the Organisation of Muslim Unity (OMU), Nigeria, has warned the federal government against succumbing to the foreign countries over its decision to legislate against same-sex marriage.
Describing the act as “evil in all ramifications,” the organisation in its communiqué issued in Lokoja by its National President, Engr. Abdulwaheed Shittu, enjoined religious leaders and organisations to rise in support of the federal government’s “quest to fight such institutionalised immorality, as well as other social vices in the country.”
It also called on the federal government to remain steadfast in its decision not to legalise same sex marriage.
It further urged the government to remain proactive on issues that promote discipline and decency which were fundamental to building an egalitarian society.
It suggested the development of an indigenous economic policy as done by Asian countries to stimulate rapid growth of the country rather than “paying subservient pimp” to foreign economic policies and programmes.
In this regard, the body said government should declare free education at all levels for every Nigerian child, adding that it would go a long way in putting paid to vices such as insecurity of lives and property in various parts of the country.
The Islamic body, however, took a swipe on the proposed National Conference, saying that “it is a waste of scarce resources that should have been injected into vital sectors of the economy such as education, health and agriculture.”
It said the proposed confab was a needless distraction, describing it as “a duplication of the function of the National Assembly,” especially as the legislative body was already working on the amendment of the constitution.
“We call on the federal government to exercise restraint in taking actions that do not enjoy mass appeal,” it said.
