Anxiety as Julius Berger bridge collapses

As watchers call for urgent structural engineering audit of all flyovers built by the company so far, there was palpable fear among the residents of Port Harcourt over the weekend when the Rumuokwurusi flyover being constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc partially collapsed, causing panic.

The flyover which is the 10th awarded to the engineering construction company last February 28, by the state government, was due for opening in a matter of days.

According to some eye witnesses, the incident happened when one of the beams of the bridge still under construction fell off.

Some other watchers said a machinery operator accidentally knocked off the beam “while doing some work,” causing it to fall off.

Meanwhile, watchers of the development have called for urgent audit of all the flyover bridges constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria in the state as well as the ongoing ones to forestall any unforeseen incident.

According to Leo Ndubisi, a resident of Elimgbu Street in the area, “Thank God no life was lost, and no injury too. But there is now need for every flyover constructed by Julius Berger and the new ones to be audited for any structural engineering defect or threat.”
