The Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN) has called on the federal government to tackle the myriad of security challenges facing the country to guarantee the survival of the nascent democracy.
The professional body also urged the Buhari administration to make conscious effort to remove the clog on the wheel of the Ajaokuta steel complex, to stimulate industrial development of the country.
President of the professional body, Dr Omede Idris, made the call at the end of the board meeting of APBN hosted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) at Victoria Island, Lagos.
The board meeting was held to specifically address national and contemporary issues, including national security, 2018 budget, food security, fuel scarcity and crisis, as well as infrastructure and executive order.
According to Dr Idris, “The security of lives and property remain a key responsibility of government where persons and individuals observe and carry out basic security norms. We appeal and request the federal government and the states to address various aspects of security more holistically.
“We expect security operatives to show commitment, sincerity and transparency in handling security matters. The buildup of political activities against the 2019 general election in the country, calls for better and improved security approach and build on previous experiences for hitch free elections.”
The body commended the federal government on what it described as “remarkable achievements in the agricultural sector, particularly its programme aimed at enhancing farmers support services, through the Anchor Borrower.”
On the Ajaokuta steel complex, the body tasked the government and associated partners to “absolve all the encumbrances to this enviable national project, 30 years after its commencement,” noting that the derivable benefits to the nation and other continents from a functional steel company are enormous.
It commended the efforts of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara in calling for urgent attention on the national edifice, saying the lawmaker should be supported in the task of national survival.
