APC govs not fighting corruption – Falana

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has said that no state government controlled by APC is fighting corruption.
Falana said this in Abuja while delivering a speech at the National Stakeholders’ Summit on Whistle-blowing, organised by the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRIMIL).

He said: “While we are gathered here to discuss corruption, we must always recognise that since year 2000 when corruption war started by the Obasanjo regime, it has been a war persecuted by the federal government alone.

“Already APC controls 21 states, and the majority of the members in the National Assembly, but you will be surprised to note that none of the state governments controlled by the APC is fighting corruption anywhere.

“The National Assembly, as you all know, has frustrated all Bills drafted and submitted to them to aid the war against corruption, therefore, the task ahead of us is herculean.

“A sitting APC governor recently insulted a Nigerian by bringing President Jacob Zuma of South Africa to our country, and giving him the highest honour in the state.

“Not only that, a statue was erected in his honour. As that ceremony was going on, South Africans were on the street demanding for the resignation of Zuma, because he has been indicted by the courts in that country and charged for over 500 counts of corruption.”

Also speaking, Mr. Chido Onumah, Coordination of AFRIMIL, said that as part of its accountability and governance initiative, it inaugurated the Corruption Anonymous (CORA) project, which is aimed at engaging civil society and Nigerians in tackling corruption.

He said: “The CORA project, which is supported by The John D and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, is aimed at creating awareness about whistle-blowing and making Nigerians see it as a tool for reducing corruption.”
