APC guber aspirants frown at consensus candidate

Ahead of the Saturday governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), three governorship aspirants, Chief Ben Eche, Ifeanyi Nwoga and Dr.
Augustine Akubue have warned the leadership of the party against sharp practice towards undermining other aspirants.
They unequivocally stated that they were not party to any consensus arrangement, stressing that if a level playing ground is not allowed in the governorship primary in the state, it will spell doom for the party.
Chief Eche said : “APC stakeholders under the leadership of Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama had debated and adopted direct primary for Enugu state.
“It is on record that I am the only candidate that visited the 17 council areas, secured endorsement and acceptance from our members.
So, no need to talk about non-existent consensus, it is against party rules,” he said.
Meanwhile, Enugu West Peoples Assembly, an APC pressure group had endorsed the candidacy of Chief Eche in the forthcoming governorship primary.
The Chairman of the group, Chief Obed Chidera made the declaration during his ground campaign tour to both Oji River and Awgu council areas, noting that Eche remains the only aspirant out of the six aspirants of the party that has visited the 17 council areas and 260 wards to solicit for votes.
One of the aspirants, Dr.
Akubue said that he had reached out to other aspirants and their position is that there is no consensus candidate.
“There is nothing like consensus candidate in Enugu.
But whoever emerges victorious in Saturday’s primary, we’ll support the person to ensure victory for our party for the 2019 general election.
Anything short of that will spell doom for the party in Enugu state,” he said.
