Arewa house @50: Sultan, Sambo preach national unity

Former Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar have urged Nigerian leaders and the led, particularly the youth, to work assiduously towards the unity of Nigeria as the panacea to its underdevelopment.

Speaking separately at the Arewa House at 50 celebration with the theme: ‘Unfinished Greatness: Towards a More Perfect Union in Nigeria’ on Saturday at the Arewa House, Kaduna, the Sultan, who served as the Royal father of the day, said the topic was key to the unity of the country and Northern Nigeria.

“The topic is so apt. So important for the unity of the country, for the unity of our leaders. We have galaxy of Northern stars here today. What happened in the last couple of weeks was wickedness by disgruntled hoodlums. We commend the Northern youth who did not join the #EndSars destructions.

“Our governors should make them part of decision making, give them projects that will make them feel part of the government. Is the North of today the North we desired? The North where our children are roaming the streets begging for food, is it the North where our girls are going to school?

“Sardauna of Sokoto wanted to develop the North by building so many projects that are still standing tall. That is left for our political leaders to build on the foundation. Let’s walk together as Arewa, let’s walk together as North, let’s develop Arewa so that we will develop the North,” he said.

According to former VP and former governor of Kaduna state, Arch. Namadi Sambo, who served as the Chairman of the occasion, “The topic of today is apt given that we are still grappling with national unity. Our speaker will highlight the critical challenges and provide an insight on how best to achieve unity in our national lives.

“The youth of this great country showed excessive aggression. Your voice is loud and bold but you must be calm and law abiding while the federal government address your demands with the urgency they deserve.

“50 years is a long journey which calls for sober reflection. Arewa House is a center of national harmony and cohesion. Arewa House remains one of the centers in Nigeria that bring people together from global diversity.”
