Army to develop own helicopter – Buratai

The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with some of its partners, is working on a prototype helicopter that will aid its operation in the North-east and other internal security tasks.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, disclosed this during exhibition of hard and soft ware at the Nigerian Army 2nd Transformation and Innovative Summit, Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja.
He said: “This is one issue that we are really much concern about and we are working towards with our partners to have it on the ground very soon.
“This is the innovation that has gingered us over the years; that we get value for the research that we have been making.”
Buratai said there were a lot of improvements in the new innovations by the Nigerian Army and its manufacturing partners since the last exhibition which took place in February 2017.
He said the summit with the theme: “Developing Local Content in Nigeria’s Defence Sector for Sustainable Combat Efficiency of the Nigerian Army,” had come to feature as a regular event in the yearly activities of the army due to the high priority placed on research and innovation as the “key drivers of the Nigerian Army transformation process,” and the local content policy of the federal government.
“The policy re-enforces the need to develop the Nigerian Defence Industrial Complex for sustainable readiness and efficiency of our armed forces.
“My vision to have a professionally responsive Nigerian Army in the discharge of its constitutional roles is predicated on maintaining a highly trained and motivated force, supported by readily available logistics.
“The successes recorded against Boko Haram insurgency and other security operations in and outside the country are attributed to the ability and ingenuity of army engineers in keeping our equipment and platforms serviceable, using local resources to sustain this purpose.”
