Army raises c’ttee on alleged troops’ misconducts during elections

The Nigerian Army has constituted a nine-man investigative committee to probe all allegations of misconducts by its personnel during the last general elections.

Army spokesperson, Col. Sagir Musa in a statement  Friday said  the committee was headed by Major General TA Gagariga, while Lt. Colonel PAJ Ebuk serves as the secretary.

 Other members of the committee were; Brig. Gen. JM Ali, Brig. Gen. GO Adeshina, Brig. Gen. MA Obari, Col. AT Bitiyong, Col. A Tanko and Col. WA Bakare.

 The statement said the committee is to submit its report not later than 31st of March, 2019.

 “The committee, which has already commenced action, was inaugurated by the army chief of  administration, Maj. General KAY Isiyaku on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS ), Lt. General Yusuf Buratai and admonished to carry out their duties objectively, fairly and transparently in line with its terms of reference.”

  Speaking further, he said, “The committee’s terms of reference centred mainly on a thorough investigation of the activities, actions and/or inactions of Nigerian Army personnel in all the states where alleged infraction/wrong doing or otherwise were done.

” It is also to collate and thoroughly analyse all reports to determine the veracity of the allegations including the alleged assassination attempt on Rivers state governor and the circumstances that led to the shooting to death of Lt. Kurmi as well as that leading to serious injuries to an officer and some soldiers in the state.

 “It is further mandated to visit all states where issues have been raised about the conduct of Nigerian Army during and after the elections and also interact with civil society organisations, sister security agencies and state governors.”

 The chairman of the committee assured the COAS that it would be objective and professional in carrying out the assignment.
