A non-governmental organisation, Advocates of the Garb (AOG) has called for an end to the unwarranted attacks on the Senate President Ahmad Lawan, by some Nigerians over his position on the resolution of the Southern governors to ban open grazing in the southern part of the country.
In Asaba, Delta state capital last Tuesday, the 17 Southern governors called on President Muhammadu Buhari to address the nation on security challenges facing the country.
The governors also announced a ban on open grazing across the region even as they declared support for the unity of the country.
In response to the governors’ resolutions, Senate President Lawan opposed ban of the open grazing and the call for national dialogue.
AOG said in a statement that: “We have noticed with dismay, the growing attacks on the person of Dr Lawan, ever since his timely caution against the resort to regionalism by governors from the southern part of the nation.’’
AOG also said the Speaker House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, also faulted the governors’ position on their national security.
According to the NGO, Speaker Gbajabiamila also said all must ‘imbibe the spirit of oneness, togetherness, unity and love,’ instead of promoting division of the country.
The group further said: “The Senate President was also explicit in his opposition to the resort to regionalism for an issue that should be nationally resolved.
“We should avoid regionalism. We are all leaders and we are in this together. The solutions to our challenges must come from us regardless of what level of government we are, whether at the federal, state or the local government level. I believe that Nigeria is going to come out of these challenges stronger.”
