Assault: Journalist demands N5m, apology from NSCDC

Oyo state correspondent of Leadership, Adebayo Waheed, has demanded N5 million as compensation for “harassment, assault and public humiliation” he suffered in the hands of operatives of the Oyo state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Diocese in a letter by his lawyer, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, of Crescent Chambers threatened to drag NSCDC to court if it failed to meet his demands.
In the letter, dated January 31, 2014, the journalist demanded unreserved apology to be published “in at least three national dailies within 10 days from the date of receipt of this letter.”

“In view of the highly unfortunate harassment and assault our client experienced in the hands of your personnel, we hereby demand payment of the sum of N5 million only to our client as compensation for the harassment, assault and public humiliation he suffered and payment of the sum of N150, 000 only as replacement cost for the items he lost.”

The journalist in the letter stated that he was assaulted by one of the NSCDC  operatives, one Femi Bamidele, adding that “in the ensuing drama, our client’s clothes were torn, he lost his identity card, his Samsung Mobile phone, glasses and the sum of N20, 000.”
