Association seeks support in fight against female circumcision

A group, Novel Association for Youth Advocacy (NAYA), has called for the collaboration of governments and relevant stakeholders to support the campaign against female genital mutilation in some parts of the country.
Its National Coordinator, Mrs. Kehinde Afolabi, said the danger associated with the practice, called for stringent steps in addressing the issue.
The coordinator stated this recently at the end of training and inauguration of end-FGM (stop female circumcision) clubs in secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Kuje town.
Mrs. Afolabi urged governments to start up measures that “will help in educating young girls on the implications of female genital mutilation.”
The coordinator said involving of school children was to build their capacity to become advocates in awareness creation against the practice.
According to her, the younger ones need necessary information that can empower them in addition to assisting them to share ideas with their peers.
Mrs. Afolabi urged the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that the FGM was introduced in school curriculums to boost the teaching.
The schools that participated in the training included Handmaidens Girls’ Secondary School, Kuje, Junior Secondary School, Kuje, Junior Secondary School, Pasali-Kuje, and Junior Secondary School, Pegi-kuje.
