ASUU thumbs down Adamu, Ngige over impasse

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano zone, has accused the Minister of labour and Employment, Chief Christ Ngige, of not doing anything to end the impasse between the federal government and the union.

The union’s zonal coordinator, Prof Mahmud Lawan, made the accusation at a news conference in Kano Thursday.

He said the minister, who is supposed to serve in conciliatory capacity, had instead become a government propaganda machine throughout the engagement and had failed in his mandate to mediate dispassionately.

“It is noteworthy for the patriotic people of Nigeria to know that the union has noticed that the office of the Minister of Labour and Employment, has failed woefully in its mandate mediate dispassionately.

“Worse in performance in this matter is the office of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, who has failed to mediate adequately between the union and the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ he said.

Lawan expressed concerns over the irresponsive posture of the office of President Muhammadu Buhari on the future of education and youth in the country.

“As you are aware that we in ASUU with the constitutional obligation of protecting and advancing the socio-economic and cultural interests of the nation, have continued through the decades to struggle for the survival and revitalisation of public universities, reverse the brain drain and restoration of excellence and academic freedom in Nigerian universities.’’

He said the union would remain resolute until all its demands were met as no amount of starvation would make them succumb to pressures from the federal government.
