Asymmetry warfare: Army organises career planning for officers

The involvement of the Nigerian Army in internal security operations and the nature of the fourth generation warfare have made it imperative for good leadership and efficient career planning for personnel, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said.

Speaking at a 2-day Career Planning and Management at the Nigerian Army War College, Abuja, the army chief, represented by Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Maj. Gen. Aliyu Nani, said the seminar was organised due to the need for the Nigerian Army to improve its approach in career planning and human resources management in order to get the best out of its officers and soldiers while helping them to chat memorable and rewarding career track.

He said: “The Career Planning and Management Seminar is designed to avail the officers with contemporary approach to human resource management.

“You will also be exposed to human resource management in a world of volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (VUCA). As some of you may be aware VUCA originated for the attempts to develop strategic leadership at the United States Army War College as a response to fourth generation warfare, which is largely shapeless. An understanding of this concept would help you anticipate the issue that shape events and give you a fair understanding of the consequences of issues and actions.

“It will afford you the opportunity to appreciate the interdependence of the multitude of variables affecting our security while preparing for alternative realities and challenges.

“ The seminar will also avail the opportunity to understand recent policy decisions by Army Headquarters that bother on career planning and the part you are expected to play in order to realise the objectives of the policies.”

Buratai said the army was making “giant stride against the Islamic State of West Africa (ISWA) in a bid to “unhinge the unholy union between them and remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists” in the North east.

Earlier, the Acting Military Secretary, Brig. Gen. Gabriel Ochigbano, said the seminar was in line with the Chief of Army Staff vision “To have a professionally responsive army in the discharge of its constitutional role.”
