ATBU to unbundles computer science programme


The Vice Chancellor of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi Professor Muhammadu Ahmad Abdulazeez, has disclosed plan to unbundle Computer Science programme into different degree courses.


He made the plan known Wednesday while presenting computer laptops to staff of the department of mathematical sciences in their Yelwa campus’ e-library.


The computers were donated to the department by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).


According to him, the aim of the unbundling of the computer science department into various degree awarding departments is to create room for specializations in view of the expanding new areas in the subject.


The Vice Chancellor explained that the need to unbundle the subject has become compelling adding that the initiative holds out a lot of promise for ATBU and the Nigerian economy.


“The university senate has meanwhile approved the establishment of four courses in the university to tackle the trend in cyber security and cybercrime in the world”. He said.


Also speaking, the head of computer science department Dr Abdulsalam Ya’u Gital opined that the department could generate more internal revenue and enhance the financial autonomy of the university.


He explained that the proposed courses are software engineering, information system and cybercrime security adding that the rest are artificial intelligence and information technology.


According to him, the university would pioneer the course on cyber security and digital forensic in the country. The courses he noted would be at both the undergraduate and post graduate levels.
