Atiku wins 28 Akwa Ibom LGs

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won by a landslide in Akwa Ibom in the Presidential and National Assembly elections conducted nationwide last Saturday.

Out of the 31 local governments that results were announced, the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, won in 28 local governments with total votes of 397,830.

The APC candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, polled a total of 170,220 votes and won in only two local government areas, which are Mbo and Essien Udim.

Elections were cancelled in one LG due to violence and attack of electoral officials by hoodlums in the area.

Collation Officer for the presidential election in the state and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin Prof Osasere Orumense commended the efforts of the electoral officers and urged them to ensure a smooth conduct of election in areas where elections were not held.

He expressed sadness over the conduct of some politicians in the area and called for restraint from them in future elections.

Elections were cancelled in most wards in Essien Udim where Akpabio hails from after INEC officials alleged massive electoral irregularities in most of the polling units in the area, including votes cast being more than number of registered voters in most places.

The PDP has also won all the 10 House of Representatives seats and also in two of the three senatorial seats where results were declared.

There is still confusion over the result of Ikot Ekpene senatorial district where the PDP has alleged that Senator Akpabio is trying to manipulate result in his Essien Udim LGA after initial result according to the party indicated he has lost to the PDP candidate, former deputy governor Chris Ekpeyong.

But the state INEC REC Barrister Mike Igini, who had admitted problems in the electoral process in the area, explained that such problems would be rectified while the senatorial election result would be announced in the senatorial District headquarters at Ikot Ekpene after collation.
