I wish to draw the attention of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, to the decision of the federal government to exclude workers in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education from the implementation of the new minimum wage since December 2019.
It is imperative that the NLC urgently intervenes in the matter so as to prevent a possible nationwide strike by the affected workers. A stitch in time, as they say, saves nine. The federal government ought to understand that such an industrial action, especially at this trying period in Nigeria’s history would have far-reaching consequences for the education sector.
It is sad to think that the government could toy with a critical sector as higher education. The situation is not only worrisome, but also unfortunate.
