Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), will today storm Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital for the North-central zone nationwide rally to sensitise Nigerians on the battle for financial and administrative independence of the local government.

President of NULGE, Comrade Ibrahim Khaleel, who disclosed this, said local government workers across the federation would embark on a nationwide rally to support the efforts by the National Assembly, to grant both administrative and financial autonomy to the third tier of government in the country.
The President, who spoke journalists after the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC), meeting held in Abuja, recently, said the rally would be used to sensitize the members of the state assemblies on the desirability of local government autonomy.

According to him, the rally is one of the advocacy activities mapped out to ensure that the local government areas are financially and administratively autonomous in line with the global standard practice.
He said: “One of the demands at the United Nations meeting was that the LGAs across the world be made to be autonomous in line with the democratic principles”
He said members of the unions have sanctioned advocacy rallies across the six geopolitical zones of the country at designated centres, including: South-west zone, Lagos, March 22;

South-south zone, Calabar, March 24; North-west zone, Kano, March 30; South-east zone, Enugu, April 6; North-east zone, Jalingo, April 2.
He said the grand finale would hold in Abuja on April 27, adding that the union at the state and local government levels would also conduct similar rallies.
The union leader assured that NULGE would collaborate with the National Assembly to ensure that the LGAs autonomy becomes a reality.
