Avoid setting unrealistic goals, group tells Nigerians

The chief executive officer of Adicare Rehabilitation Home, an NGO, Mrs Veronica Eze, has advised Nigerians to avoid setting unrealistic goals, as it could lead to illicit acts and unhealthy medical conditions.

Eze gave the advice during a screening exercise organised by the NGO in conjunction with Wise Women Fellowship Tuesday, at Suberu-Oje community, Alagbado, Lagos.

She said  the screening programme was organised to provide free medical services to the vulnerable who could not afford medical bills.

Eze said there was need for Nigerians to set their goals and targets according to their capabilities and financial resources rather than setting goals that their finances could not carry.

She said setting goals above one’s capabilities could make one to breakdown in the course of achieving the target and could cause one to be involved in illegal activities in life.

She stated further that setting unrealistic goals could cause one to develop some medical problems that could cost huge amount of money to cure or eventually result in death. She said many Nigerians are fond of placing their hands where they cannot reach.

“That is responsible for the incessant increase in criminal acts and social vices in the country today. Yes, it is good to set goals and be ambitious in life, but setting unrealistic goals that you know your resources cannot meet is socially and medical dangerous.

“It is unfortunate that some parents will put their children in expensive schools where their financial status does not reach just because their neighbours or office colleagues put their children there.

“This attitude can cause one to breakdown in the course of struggling to meet the financial responsibilities or develop some medical ailments or be forced to engage in illegal activities.

“Thus, there is need for Nigerians to learn to cut their coats according to their sizes and available materials in order to live healthy lifestyle,” Eze said.
