Ayade on Senate’s works c’ttee tour: It’s divine intervention

As the Senate Committee on Works complete tours of the South-south zone, Governor of Cross River state has said that the tour was “divinely arranged to save innocent souls being lost almost on a daily basis in the zone.” Ayade praised the senators for engaging in the “onerous task of going round to ensure that correct things are done for the benefi t of Nigerians that elected them.” He noted that as the year “is fast winding up, many people from the South-south, particularly Cross River state, always want to celebrate the end of the year with relatives and loved ones and the condition of the roads have in the past cut short their plans as many are consumed in the process.” According to him, “your visit is divinely arranged to save lives that are being wasted almost on daily basis on our roads as your visit will not only ensure that jobs are done on time, but quality work done.” Responding, the vicechairman of the Committee, Senator Cliff ord Ordia, said “it is a call of duty for federal lawmakers to pay courtesy visits to each chief security offi cer of any state visited.” He, on behalf of the committee, appreciated the “warm reception” accorded the delegation by Governor Ayade.

Th e committee that spent fi ve days in the zone also visited the Calabar/Ogoja Road in Cross Rivers being handled by Messrs Sermatech, and expressed satisfaction with the quality of job done, even as it urged the contractor to speed up the pace of the work. Ordia warned that gone were the days when contractors secured contracts and abandoned work after being mobilised. According to him, “nowadays people are morally burdened to ensure that the correct things are done as we are reaping ugly situation from the neglects of yesteryears where things are done anyhow without supervision.”

In Akwa Ibom state, Governor Emmanuel Udom commended the Committee for its initiative after it had visited sites where construction works were ongoing. Also appreciating the Committee, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state sought the collaboration of the private sector on roads, adding that road construction and maintenance should not be left in the hands of the government alone. In Rivers, the Committee visited several project sites including the Eleme-PortHarcourt road and Port-HarcourtAba road. Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa told the Committee in Yenagoa that the state was one of those where federal projects were minimal.
