Bala suspends LG chairman over farmers/herders’ violent clashes


Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state on Wednesday suspended the caretaker chairman of Misau local government of the state Mohammed Tanko Gwaram, his deputy Baidu Kafin Sule and the secretary of the council Usman Abdu following the violent clashes on Monday and Tuesday in the area between farmers and herdsmen that led to the death of nine people.


Addressing Journalists at the executive chamber of the government house Bauchi shortly after a meeting with security chiefs in the state, the governor said the local government leaders have been suspended and that a prompt investigation would be conducted to find out the remote cause of the crisis.
Meanwhile, the governor appointed a sole administrator in the person of Isa Kufai to oversee the affairs of the local government.


“We discussed extensively the happenings in Misau local government where we had some clashes and skirmishes which resulted in the loss of nine lives and many injuries.


“We have decided that some decisive measures must be taken in order to avert the recurrence of this very ugly situation.


“In this particular case, we have decided to suspend the caretaker chairman of Misau local government along with his deputy and secretary”. He said.


According to him, an investigative panel would be set up to be headed by retired Air vice marshal Tijjani Gamawa with representatives of the commissioner of police, director SSS  civil defense and attorney general of the state, chairman state house of assembly committee on security, chairman house committee on local government, SSA security etc.


He charged them to gather important information and come up with a report on the matter adding that he has now directed the commissioner of police to mobilize the mobile unit under his control to the local government to ensure peace prevails there.


Bala warned that anybody who disrupts the peace enjoyed in the state would be decisively dealt with.
