Banditry: Humanitarian Affairs minister tasks NEMA, NCFRMI on Kaduna victims

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq, has directed agencies to provide immediate support and assistance to victims of banditry in Igabi local government area of Kaduna state.

In a statement made available to Blueprint Weekend in Abuja, by her office, having reviewed preliminary assessment reports on the displacement of over 2,000 people from their villages in Kaduna state, Farouq directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) to immediately provide support and assistance to the displaced persons.

She said the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development exists to be responsive to the plight of innocent Nigerians who are victims of humanitarian emergencies,  disasters and social challenges”.

 She explained that, under her watch, the Ministry and agencies under it will do their best to ensure help gets to people on time whenever any unfortunate incident occurs, even as she further directed the two agencies to update her accordingly; with a view to providing lasting solutions to the predicament of the people concerned.

“This is a very sad and unfortunate situation. I can imagine the distress and discomfort those affected are experiencing as a result of being sent out of their homes unceremoniously. I appeal to them to remain calm as government looks into the matter not just to provide immediate relief, but to assist them return to their homes as soon as possible,” she said.

It could be recalled that not less than 15 villages in Igabi local government area of Kaduna state were attacked by armed bandits on Sunday, October 20; leading to over 2,000 people being displaced and taking refuge at the LEA Primary School in Birnin Yero.
