A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Sunday Akere, has appealed to president Muhammadu Buhari to be more of Nigerian president than a Northern or Fulani leader.
Speaking at a news forum of the Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Osogbo, Tuesday, the former Commissioner for information and strategy during the administration of Rauf Aregbesola maintained that president Buhari must treat every section equally as a president.
He noted that inequality in the sharing of position is not good for the country, urging the president to be fair to every sections that voted for him.
He said, “I need to advise Buhari that he should be more of a Nigerian leader than a Northern or Fulani leader because a situation where we have 27 appointment of Judges and 23 from a section of the country, that is not too good for us. Whoever we want to have as leader must see Nigeria as our own and treat everybody as being equal.”
Commenting on the alleged internal crisis within the APC, Akere insisted that the party is still one and the Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, remains the leader of the party in Osun.
He said, “Oyetola is the leader of the APC in Osun and we must all rally round to support him and ensure that he succeed. There is a single party in Osun and it is under the chairmanship of Prince Adegboyega Famodun, while the leader of the party is Alhaji Isiaka Oyetola. There might be misgivings or internal wranglings, there is only one APC in Osun,” Akere insisted.
On the recently conducted zonal congress of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Akere described the congress as “a balance of terror,” noting that it was to show who really is the leader of the party in the Southwest.
“What we witness during the zonal congress of PDP was a balance of terror. A day before the congress, you could see that a faction was well prepared that if things did not go there way, the ground will open and swallow the others. The faction that did not want to be swallowed gently accepted defeat even if they are crying some days after that the election was rigged. At least they accepted at the venue so that the ground will not swallow them. The congress where a delegates of about 758 were supposed to vote and the 18-seater buses that entered Osogbo from Ibadan was over 200. It was a balance of terror and to really show who is the leader of the party.”
The APC chieftain also called for decentralization of power to make the centre less attractive.
