The Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, has made case for more manpower, infrastructure, and accommodation, to boost effectiveness among officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
Dingyadi stated this while playing host to the Belgian Ambassador, David Bertrand, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja.
A press statement by the Head, Press and Public Relations Unit, Odutayo Oluseyi, said the minister was assured of the federal government’s unwavering effort in reforming the Police.
Dingyadi said special attention was being paid in the areas of training, procurement of equipment, and technology.
He said, “Insecurity is a threat to peaceful co-existence and development of any nation, however, it is not indigenous to Nigeria but a global phenomenon which must be tackled with global support.”
According to the minister, “Policing infrastructure and expertise can also be improved if the existing Belgium security relations with the Sahel region can be explored.
“The police is structured to spread across the country thus introduction of community policing will help a great deal in curbing insecurity, even at the grass roots.”
Earlier, the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, David Bertrand, said the purpose of the visit is to discuss the internal security situation in Nigeria and the role of the Police as well as possible ways to strengthen the bilateral relations between Nigeria and Belgium.
He commended the NPF on their expertise in the discharge of their duties particularly Police personnel posted to protect diplomats.
The Ambassador noted that Nigeria is the first economy in Africa and the most important country as far as democracy was concerned and as such deserved cooperation and partnership to sustain lasting peace and security.
