Bello, Aliyu mourn as Niger Guardian correspondent dies

The member of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Niger state council, Akin Allofetekun representing the Guardian Newspapers in the state, has died. He died Tuesday night at the age of 64 years.

The death of the veteran journalist Wednesday threw the state government and members of the union into mourning.

Niger state governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, and his predecessor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu were first to commiserate with the  Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) over the demise of the state correspondent of the Guardian Newspaper.

In separate condolence messages, the leaders expressed shock over the death of the correspondent, describing him as a disciplined gentleman who gave all to the journalism profession.

Governor Sani Bello in a condolence message signed by his chief press secretary, Mary Noel-Berje, described Akin Allofetekun as  “a seasoned and professional journalist who has made his mark in journalism profession.”

He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the entire members of the correspondent chapel in particular and the NUJ in general over the great loss.

The former governor, Muazu Babangida Aliyu, expressed deep shock and sadness over the death of the veteran journalist whom he said was one of the leading figures in journalism practice in Niger state.

Aliyu in a statement by his media aide, Bala Bitrus, commiserated with the immediate family members of the deceased journalist and the entire members of the union, particularly the state council and correspondents chapel of the NUJ in Niger state.
