Bello’ll reward medal-winning young athletes – Director

Director of FCT Sports Council, Mrs. Dilichukwu Onyedinma, has disclosed that young athletes from the FCT Sports Council, who went to Ilorin in Kwara state last year and won medals, despite facing challenges of not having adequate training, compared to their counterpart in other states, will be rewarded.
According to her, the young athletes will be awarded by the FCT Minister, Malam Musa Bello, on Thursday, this week.
She said: “FCT Sports was among the states that participated in the 2017 Youth Games in Ilorin. The journey wasn’t easy. We trained hard and tried as much as possible to bring under 17 athletes that were needed for the game. Even when we were seen as the youngest team, the children were able to do FCT proud.
“Together, we were able to win about eleven medals. In addition to that, five of our girls won scholarships when they won gold medals.
“It was a very big achievement and we had the youngest players, especially our players in the chess and gymnastics. So, as young as they were, they were able to win medals as well.”
She observed that the FCT Minister and other stakeholders involved will be on ground to reward the children on Thursday and that the awards are in recognition of the children’s exploits in Ilorin last year and to arm the children with sports paraphernalia, as sports will help the children to attain stardom.
“Everybody is working hard to make sure that these children are encouraged, so that many other children who indulge in things that are not supposed to be part of their growing up should stay out of it and probably find a way to engage in one sport or the other; to make themselves better human beings. So, this is what is on board.”
