Electricity consumption billings under estimated billing arrangement of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) is higher than the nation’s N18, 000 minimum wage for workers, rights group have said.
The group, Network of Civil Society Organization of Nigeria (NOCSON) said five years after the BEDC was issued its operational license, the management has failed in all areas of expectations.
It said the people have lost faith in the company’s capacity to deliver their part of the contract with the federal government.
Secretary General of NOCSON, Ogbidi Emmanuel, who stated this at a media briefing in Benin City urged the federal government not to renew the operating license of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) over what it described as poor service delivery.
He said the operating license of electricity distribution in the area which includes, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti and Delta states should be re-awarded a reliable and competent company.
Emmanuel also seek the probe BEDC activities and action in order to make them pay for damages arising from “unprofessional services”
According to him, “NOCSON join its voice with millions of innocent Nigerians to reject the com back in handling power distribution”.
Spokesman for BEDC, Tayo Adekunle, said the company’s operating license is for initial 15 years and a renewable 10 years, adding that “the issue of estimated billing is a middle way billing of customers who are not metered or have faulty meter.
