Benue lifts ban on worship centres, direct workers to resume June 1

The Benue state government Thursday reviewed the ongoing partial lockdown and lifted the ban earlier placed on worship centres.

The state government also directed workers from grade levels 1-12, who were earlier asked to work from home to resume work with effect from June 1, 2020.

Benue state government had on 31st March, 2020, after discovery of the COVID-19 index case placed a ban on worship centres, social gatherings, closed down markets, directed workers from Grade Level 1-12 to stay and work at home, among other things.

But briefing newsmen after a joint meeting of the Benue state Executive Council and the state Action Committee on COVID-19 Thursday, Governor Ortom said the worship centres, including churches and mosques will be reopened beginning from Thursday.

He said inter-state movement remained prohibited, except those on essential services.

The governor also said the prevailing curfew in the state, which was earlier from 7 pm to 6 am will now last between the hours of 8pm to 6am daily, until further notice.

The governor also said street trading would be encouraged but traders must strictly obey social distancing protocol on COVID-19, adding that markets will be partially opened to enable traders’ access their shops.

He advised workers and members of the congregation in worship centres to always wear face masks and maintain social distancing as they go to work or worship.

He urged churches to strictly observe safety rules of washing of hands with soap, use of sanitisers and hold staggering masses or services with restricted number of persons.
