Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba meet to address border crises

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state will Tuesday attend a joint security meeting of Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba states scheduled to take place in Lafia. 

The meeting among other issues is expected to address renewed violence in border communities of the three states such as last week’s attack on Jootar in Ukum local government of Benue state by armed militia.

It could be noted that activities of armed bandits, militia men and land disputes at the border areas have resulted to serious insecurity leading to deaths and destruction of property worth hundreds of millions of naira.

These include the Jukun/Tiv clashes at the border communities between Benue and Taraba as well as the herdsmen attack at the border between Benue and Nasarawa.

A press statement issued Monday and signed Chief Press Secretary to the Benue state governor, Terver Akase, stakeholders from the affected states and governors will rub minds and find a permanent solution to the insecurity.

Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom has reassured Benue people that he will meet with the COVID-19 Action Committee on Wednesday April 16, 2020 to review the measures put in place to prevent the spread of the pandemic in the state.

He said the meeting which was to hold Monday April 13, was shifted to Wednesday, as a result of the public holiday. 

The governor expressed appreciation to Benue people for their understanding and cooperation, which he noted have significantly complemented the efforts of the State Government against the virus. 

He called for sustained cooperation from the people in the face of the difficulties the dusk to dawn curfew, closure of markets and other public places might have caused them.
