Benue revenue agency generates N8.4bn in 2016

Benue state government has disclosed that the Benue State Internal Revenue Services (BIRS) was able to generate N8.4bn in 2016.
This is as the state spent N572, 573,682.71 on travels during the period under review.
The Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning, David Olofu and the chairman of the revenue agency, Mrs. Mimi Adzape Orubibi, jointly made the disclosure yesterday in Makurdi during the 2015-2016 Ministerial Accountability press briefing.

She added that the amount generated was a great improvement from 2015 of N7.6 billion.
She gave a breakdown as PAYE N4billion, direct assessment N4.6 million, road taxes N236 million, N24 million from other taxes, while the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and returns from consultant account for N3.5 billion and N223 million.
“We would have met our target of N10 billion only if arrears of N2.4 billion were remitted by SUBEB and Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs”.

The revenue boss also intimated that the state IGR substantially increased from N884 million in January to over N1 billion in February, adding that 25 per cent of all IGR realised was paid to MDAs that render essential services.
Olofu further stated that the state tender board raised over N250 million while N259 million was realised from contract registration, processing fees and renewal.
He said the state work force stands at 17,090 after the biometric conducted by the state government, assuring that soon, ghost workers would be completely eliminated from the state.
