Beware of eating in plastic container – Expert

A lecturer at the Bayero University, Kano, Prof Adelani Tijjani Wakili has warned that packaging of food inside nylon made of polyvinchloride (PVC) or eating foods served in plastic container is very harmful to human health.
Delivering a professorial inaugural lecture yesterday at the Musa Abdullahi Auditorium, Adelani hinted that majority of the ailments being suffered by people nowadays were the result of the way people process or package their foods.
Adelani, a professor of Public Health, revealed that most of the things we see as good and sweet could be very dangerous to our health, particularly the method we adopt in processing them, from the farm to the cooking and eventually the containers with which we serve them.
“I wish to tell this gathering that using cellophane to wrap foods in our homes or at parties constitutes serious danger of inadvertently consuming large amounts of carcinogens,” he warned, adding that the ideal container is to wrap it in leaves and serve in ceramic containers.
According to him, consumption of healthy foods assist greatly in minimising health related problems in the society, which in turn allows for societal growth and development.
Other dangerous foods we consume, according to the university don iclude ponmo, which he said has no nutritional value, and advised people to, as much as possible, distant themselves from consuming it.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, in an opening remark, charged inaugural lecturers to go beyond just presentation by translating their research works into developing the society.
Bello, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof Sagir Abbas, suggested that the professorial inaugural lecture committee should collaborate with the University’s Directorate of Research Innovation and Partnership (DRIP) on how to make proper utilisation of research findings as contained in the lectures presented.
