Biosafety signs MoU with SON on safe biotech practices

National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) on ensuring safe practice of modern biotechnology in the country.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Director General of NBMA, Dr. Rufus Ebegba, told the SON delegation there is need for government agencies to work together for better result.
NBMA was established to regulate the practice of Modern Biotechnology that results in Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) is safe to both humans and the environment
“Risk assessment is a pillar of the Agency and is interested in the gene of insert. It ensures that GMOs are well analyzed to ascertain that there is no risk to Nigerians or the Nigerian environment before they are commercialized,” he said.
Director General, SON, Barrister Osita Anthony Aboloma who was represented by the Director Legal Services, Mr. Umaru Kawu, hailed the agreement saying that the Agency is ready to partner with NBMA to actualize its mandate.
He also stressed the need for government agencies to synergize, and to facilitate the set goals of government.
“It is good that the agency has signed MoUs with other major government agencies that will contribute to the effectiveness of its mandate.’’
The MoU is the fifth that has been signed by NBMA with other agencies in the bid to ensure that genetically modified products are safely deployed for the benefit of Nigerians
