Boko Haram insurgents yesterday launched fresh attacks on Konduga in Borno state, the second time in 48 hours.
Residents of Konduga and neighbouring Mailari village yesterday said Boko Haram insurgents who attacked Konduga village on Tuesday killing 39 have returned to launch fresh attacks.
They said soldiers engaged the insurgents in a fierce battle, although the outcome was not clear as at press time.
Meanwhile, at least nine soldiers were feared killed in a deadly ambush by suspected members of the Boko Haram, in the border areas of Izhe, Madagali of Adamawa state
Both local officials and a highly placed military source said the insurgents attacked the soldiers in the border areas of Madagali, north of Adamawa state.
Confirming the incident, chairman of Madagali Mr Maina Ularamu, who could not ascertain the number of casualties, said the soldiers were on a mission to repel an attack.
“The soldiers were going to repel a planned attack at Izhe border village when they were ambushed by the heavily armed insurgents.
“As I am talking to you, most villagers at the border areas have since fled to Madagali the administrative headquarters for fear of possible attacks.
“We are calling on the government to station more troops with armoured tanks.These Boko Haram insurgents have more sophisticated weapons than the soldiers,’’ said,Ularamu the council chairman.
He said that the insurgents were well armed with anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons mounted on their vehicles.
It was learnt that the troops were left to face the heavily armed insurgents, who attacked them from different directions as villagers say that there was aerial support to the soldiers.
It was also gathered that soldiers involved in the ongoing campaign against the Boko Haram insurgents were firing indiscriminately into the air to protest against the killings that could be seen as strategic errors.
Efforts to get the Brigade Commander of the 23rd Armourd Brigade,Yola, Brigadier General Rogers Nicholas, proved abortive, as he was said to had gone out for special assignment.
