National Union of Borno state Students (NUBOSS) has appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to visit the state in order to properly assess the security situation in the state rather than sending his Service Chiefs.
The union also urged the president to public to assure the government and people of Borno state that the Presidency had no plans to appoint any military sole administrator for the state following the declaration of a state of emergency in a state under the democracy as reported some sections of the media.
Its national president, Comrade Isah Mohammed Biu, made the appeals yesterday at a press conference in Maiduguri.
Her said Governor Kashim Shettima could not be removed from office as an elected governor until after the expiration of his constitutional tenure of four years, as provided for in the 1999 Constitution.
Isah criticised the declaration of state of emergency in the state, describing it as “an automatic shifting of security of the state to the hands of the federal government.”
He said: “By declaration of state of emergency in the state, the security of the state has automatically shifted to the federal government, thus making Governor Kashim Shettima a mere head of administration.”
According to him, although a good number of military personnel and weapons have been deployed to the state to arrest the situation, attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents have been renewed with the killing of innocent villagers and motorists.
Isah noted that the launching of military offensives against the insurgents by a purported military sole administrator was uncalled for, “unconstitutional and above all politicises the whole situation.””
The efforts, support and assistance Governor Shettima has rendered or shown to all and sundry most also be recognised and appreciated, especially in the areas of education, health, agriculture, housing, road construction, poverty alleviation and youths empowerment amongst others.”
