The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Safiya Umar Farouk, has finally delivered trucks of food and non food items, including building materials to the Borno state government on behalf of the federal government for onward distribution to the IDPs affected by the recent fire disaster at Muna IDP.
Over 1,613 households were affected and two lives lost.
The minister, while presenting the items Tuesday to the Borno state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, at the NEMA Central Stores located at the Maiduguri Flour Mills Area said : “Today’s visit to Borno is to condole fire victims of Muna and Albadam IDPs at the camps that led to deaths of two displaced persons. At the Ngala IDPs camp early this year, we lost 14 lives of the displaced persons.
“We’ are closely monitoring the situation with the adoption of new
strategies to protect people’s lives and property. Federal government will also soon kick- start recovery and resettlement projects for IDPs.
“The delivered food and non food items include rice, beans, maize grits, cooking oil, timber, roofing sheets and nails”, Sadiya said.
She added that the fire outbreaks in Borno state IDP camps require humanitarian intervention and technical support as the challenges of IDP camp infernos and humanitarian assistance require new strategies to curtail future reoccurrence.
The Minister further stated that President Buhari had already said that 10, 000 housing units will to be constructed in Borno state by the federal government for about 1.7 million IDPs from MMC, Jere LGC , Konduga LGC, , Magumeri LGC, Dikwa LGC, Gwoza LGC, Monguno LGC and few others.”
In his remarks while receiving the federal government’s food items and relief material support, the Borno state governor , Babagama Umara Zulum said ,“The only solution to incessant IDP camps fire outbreaks is to ensure that permanents houses are built to return all the displaced persons to their communities.”
