Breaking: 2 robbers to die by hanging in Osun

Two robbers, Ayodeji Adeleke and Abiodun Oyedunmola, have been sentenced to death by Justice Jide Falola of an Osun state High Court sitting in Ila-Orangun.

Delivering the judgement Wednesday, at Ilesa Correctional Centre where the court was moved to due to COVID-19 pandemic, justice Falola found the convicts guilty of armed robbery and conspiracy leveled against them.

The crime, according to the charge sheet, contravened sections 1(1), 2 (a) and 6(b) and punishable under section 1(1)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (special provision) Act.

The convicts were arraigned on May 24, 2019. They were said to have attacked one Owonifari Muyideen, at his residence in Oke-Ila, on April 14, 2016.

According to the charge sheet, they also robbed one Bayepade Olubunmi and Pastor Afolabi Clement between December 2015 and April 2016.

The state prosecutor, Mr. Muyiwa Ogunleye, had called five witnesses and tendered 11 exhibits, including confessional statement of convicts, one cartridge ammunition, one gun and two handsets, during the proceeding.

Justice Falola agreed that the prosecution has proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, and found the convicts guilty as charged.

Counsel to the convicts, Mr. Sulaimon Bello, urged the court to be merciful in sentencing his clients, saying they may still be useful to the society.

But, Justice Falola pronounced life imprisonment for conspiracy and sentenced the convicts to death by hanging for armed robbery.
