Breaking: After declaring presidential election results from 12 states, more collation underway with Niger on Tuesday

Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress Muhammadu Buhari has taken the lead in the early results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in seven states

His Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, Atiku Abubakar also put up a good show in the Abuja, the nation’s capital city, Abia and Ondo states.

The states, whose results were announced Monday, were less than one third of Nigeria’s 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, with the commission continuing the exercise Tuesday.

Niger state collation officer is already reeling out result from one of the north-central states.

Buhari’s victory

According to results collated and released by the INEC Collation Centre in Abuja,  Buhari  defeated the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in seven states namely;  Kwara, Osun, Ekiti, Nassarawa, Kogi,  Gombe and Yobe.

In Kwara, Buhari polled 308,984 votes to defeat Atiku who scored 138, 284 votes, while in Ekiti, the president won the PDP candidate by 65,199 votes after polling a total 219,231 votes as against Atiku’s 154,032 votes cast.

INEC Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor University of Ibadan Professor Idowu Olayinka said the total number of registered voters in the state was 899,919 with 395,741 accredited.

In Osun, Buhari polled 347,634 votes, defeating Atiku who scored 337,377 votes with the APC candidate leading with a margin of 10,257.

The figures declared by the collation officers showed that Buhari led in 18 out of the 30 local government areas in the state, while Atiku led in the remaining 12 local government areas.

In Nassarawa, the APC candidate also beat Atiku with a margin of 6,056 having polled a total of 289,903 votes to defeat the PDP candidate who got 283,847 votes.

In Gombe, Buhari led Atiku with 264,447 votes having polled a total of 402,961 against the PDP candidate’s 138,484 votes.

Also in Kogi, Buhari defeated Atiku with a margin of 67,687 votes after having garnered a total of 285,894 to defeat the PDP candidate who scored 218,207 votes.

In Yobe state, the APC won with 497,914 while the PDP scored 50,763 votes to emerge a distant second position.

Announcing the results, Professor Abubakar Musa of Federal University Wukari Taraba state said a total of 559,365 valid votes were cast while 26,772 votes were rejected.

Professor Musa also said the total votes cast were 586,137 with  4,407 of the votes cancelled.

Atiku wins

However, the candidate of the PDP humbled Buhari with a margin of 107,773 votes in the FCT having scored 259,997 votes as against APC’s 152,224.

Similarly, the former vice president defeated the APC in Ondo state.

Announcing the results, Vice Chancellor Federal University Oye Ekiti Professor Kayode Soremekun said the PDP scored 275,901, while the APC polled 241,761.

Similarly, the PDP also won the presidential election in Abia state polling 219,698 votes while the APC scored 85,058 votes to emerge second.

The result was announced by Professor Chinedum Nwajuba of the Alex Ekwueme University Ebonyi state.

Nwajuba stated that a total of 323,291 valid votes were cast while there was 21,180 rejected votes with 344,471 as total votes cast.
