Breaking: Court grants Mason Greenwood bail over ‘rape, assault’ allegations

Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has been granted bail on Wednesday October 19, 2022.

Judge John Potter granted Greenwood bail after a short hearing at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.

Greenwood, 21, who plays for Manchester United will be allowed home after two nights in jail following a bail application by his legal team.

He is being held at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham, north Wales.

The Man Utd star has been charged with the attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault of a teenage student.

Greenwood was not present at the brief hearing in court this morning.

It was held in private with the press having to watch outside Court 4.

His bail conditions mean he has to stay at his rented home in Bowdon, Greater Manchester, and is not allowed to contact the complainant or a string of witnesses.

The forward appeared in the dock at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday, wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey jogging bottoms.

He had been denied bail until a crown court appearance on November 21 but he was granted bail today after his legal team made the bail application.

The footballer was charged with attempting to rape a woman on October 22, 2021.

He is also accused of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour, namely ‘monitoring her social media accounts and making threats and derogatory comments towards her, amounting to a serious affect upon her’.

He is also accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on December 21.

The player was first held in January over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

He had been on bail since then, but was arrested in the Trafford area on Saturday for an alleged breach of conditions by contacting the alleged victim.
