Breaking – La Liga: Diego Costa handed 8-match ban after assaulting Ref, to miss rest of the season

Diego Costa has been banned for eigth games after telling the referee “I s*** on your whore mother” last Saturday.

The Spanish striker, 30, was given a straight red during Atletico’s 2-0 loss against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

Costa confronted referee Gil Manzano and launched a foul mouthed rant that was so vulgar he was given a red card.

It sparked mass protest from the Atletico team-mates and Costa had to be escorted off the pitch with his Spanish team-mate Gerard Pique ushering the shamed striker away.

On Wednesday The Spanish Football Federation discussed the incident and agreed on an eight game suspension – which will rule Costa out of the rest of the season.

Costa is also accused of preventing the referee from showing a yellow card to teammates Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez by holding his arm.

The ex-Chelsea man has been handed two four-game bans for the respective incidents.

Furthermore, he has received a £5,200 while the RFEF have also punished Atletico for the conduct of their player.
