Breaking: Lawmakers brake Mace in Jigawa over speakership position

Rowdy session over outstanding Rules on the floor of the Jigawa State House of Assembly has led to the breaking of the House Mace into two pieces.

According to an eye witness, trouble started when the speaker of the House, Hon Isa Idris Gwaram announced the decision to amend the House standing rule stipulated that all former speakers and deputy speakers‎ cannot vie for speakerhip in the forthcoming assembly.

However this action was viewed by other members nursing the idea of returning the former Speaker, Hon. Idris Garba Jahun as a ploy to disqualify their man and any other principal officer that was suspended or impeached to re contest for the position of speaker again.

The decision was met with a stiff resist‎ance by those members who kicked against it.

Lading the crusade, member representing ‎Yankwashi state constituency Abdulrahman Alkassim stood up and opposing the proposed amendment and was supported by a vast majority of the members.

Findings by our correspondent has further revealed that the trouble was directly connected to the underground move by some members to impeach the present speaker and replace him with the former speaker of the house, Honourablr Idris Garba Jahun.

This move to replace the present Speaker was alleged to have the support of the executive, although it could be authenticated at the movement of filing this report. The report also has it that the present Speaker is not an easy going partner to some members.

The crisis snowballed into exchange of abusive words, dragging among  members which resulted to a fist to cuff fight that later led to the breaking of the assembly Mace into  parts which was put together later to enable to house sit for adjournment.

All efforts by journalists to speak to the Speaker or any principal officer  failed. Ealier journalists were bared from entering the premise of the house, but event when they ganined entry, no comment was uttered to any on the happening that led to the trouble.
