Breaking: Mikel Obi undergoes medical, ready to join Middlesbrough

John Obi Mikel will end his two-year stint in China to join Championship side Middlesbrough in the coming days.

The former Chelsea midfielder was desperate to seal a move back to England as his wife and two young children remained in the United Kingdom following his move to Tianjin TEDA.

Middlesbrough have come to Mikel’s rescue, according to The Sun, as the Nigerian midfielder is on the cusp of signing for the Championship side.

The 31-year-old is undergoing a medical ahead of signing for Tony Pulis’ side as they push for promotion.

Mikel was reportedly attracting interest from European sides Roma and Wolfsburg but was set on returning to England to be closer to his family.

The Nigeria international, who will be hoping to represent his country during this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, was also linked with a move to Crystal Palace.

Mikel won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the League Cup during his 11-year spell at Chelsea.

He also achieved success in European competitions with the Blues as he won both the Champions League and Europa League during his time in England.

Middlesbrough, who face Newport in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, are currently fifth in the Championship.
