Breaking: Nadal dusts Schwartzman, sails into US Open semis

Champion Rafael Nadal a while ago overcame 6-4 7-5 6-2 to book a place in the semi-final of the ongoing US Open tennis competition.

The world number two was twice delayed by the stocky Argentinian as he struggled to see off the 20th seed.

But the Spaniard dug deep to beat Schwartzman 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 in two hours and 46 minutes on court at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The crowd certainly got their money’s worth with some stunning tennis played on the court.

Even despite the straight sets scoreline, Schwartzman was always with a chance to an upset.

The 26-year-old played some of the best tennis of his career to haul himself back from 0-4 and 1-5 down in the first and second sets.

But Nadal went up a gear to get beyond the finish line and he looks to be the overwhelming favourite to secure a fourth US Open title.

He will play Matteo Berrettini for a place in Sunday’s final after the Italian beat Gael Monfils in an epic five-setter.

It is Nadal’s 33rd Grand Slam semi-final as he aims for a 19th title to home in on Roger Federer’s haul of 20.
