Breaking: Nasarawa Assembly indicts SSG for alleged embezzlement


Nasarawa state House of Assembly Adhoc Committee investigating renovation and fencing of Public Secondary Schools in the state has indicted the Secretary to the state government Aliyu Tijani of embezzlement of over N200 million.


Chairman of the Committee Mr Daniel Ogazi announced this during plenary in Lafia the state capital.


Mr Daniel Ogazi said out of the over N1.4 billion released for the renovation of secondary schools in the state, Aliyu Tijani who was the Commissioner for Education when the contract was awarded by the previous administration could not account for about N300 million.


He stated that the committee  found out that most of the contractors handling the renovation project disappeared after they were paid mobilization fees while some abandoned the project shortly after commencement.


Daniel Ogazi noted that Aliyu Tijani had admitted to take responsibility of the findings when he appeared before the investigative committee.


He explained that the SSG has displayed blatant inefficiency, incompetency and ineffectiveness in the performance of his duties and thereby, should refund the unaccounted funds to the coffers of the state government.


” Based on the committe’s recommendations the total sum of N873,233,942.60was expended based on information from the payment Voucher(PVs)excluding 5% deductions for Monitoring and Evaluation as payments for the completed and uncompleted projects.


” The total released contract sum was N1,084,000,000 only ,if deducted N873,233,942.60from the total contract sum this will amount to N210,766,057.40


” The add 5%/Monitoring and Evaluation which is N37,718,499.19.The total sum of unaccounted funds will amount to N248,484,556.60.


He therefore, urged the state government to declare state of emergency on all the projects sites to ensure its completion.
The speaker of the house Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, after receiving the reports slated Tuesday, 2nd June, 2020 ,for deliberation on the report.
