Breaking: Presidential Tribunal orders subpoena on INEC Chair, Zamfara REC

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) sitting in Abuja has ordered that subpoena be issued on the duo of Chairman Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmud Yakubu and the Zamfara state resident electoral commissioner (REC)

A subpoena is a request for the production of documents, or a request to appear in court or other legal proceeding and it was granted when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the last presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, who are petitioners before the tribunal made the request.

Yakubu and Zamfra REC are, by the subpoena issued on July 9, 2019, expected to appear and produce some documents used for the last election, required by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the last presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, who are petitioners before the tribunal

At the resumed proceedings Wednesday, the petitioners’ lawyer, Chris Uche, told the tribunal that the subpoena had been served on the two officials, saying they have failed to either appear or make available the documents requested.

Consequently, the tribunal chairman, Justice Mohammed Garba has orderd INEC’s lawyer, Yunus Usman to take the necessary steps to ensure the subpoena is complied with.

The tribunal chair affirmed that the record of the court indicated that the duo of Yakubu and Zamfara REC were served on July 12 and July 15 respectively and required to produce the documents.
