Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema produced a brace each to enable their countries – Portugal and France share honours, both top strikers converting from the spot (Ronaldo twice and Benzema once) during the final group matches on Wednesday night.
Ronaldo and Benzema were teammates at Real Madrid before the former moved to Juventus in Italy.
In the other fixture, Germany saved themselves from group phase exit with their second equaliser in the 84th minute through Leon Goretzka.
All three top sides in the “group of death” – France, Germany and defending champions Portugal – progress to the Round of 16.
France will face Switzerland in the second round, while Germany take on England and Portugal challenge Belgium.
