Breaking: ‘Strange’ fire envelops Anambra mortuary, burns over 200 corpses

No fewer than 200 corpses were on Saturday burnt beyond recognition at Enugwu-Ukwu general hospital, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The fire incident, which started reportedly started at about 3 o’clock pm gutted mostly the three room of  the General hospital completely before fire service officials arrived to save it from affecting other sections of the hospital.

The mortician on duty couldn’t stop the fire as he was the only person on duty and they couldn’t ascertain the cause of the fire.

But according to the eye witneses who confided with Blueprint Correspondent, “the fire may have come from bush burning as the surrounding is over grown with dry grasses.”

Confirming the development, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Muhammed, said the Police Patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO Nimo Division), CSP EGU Benjamin rushed to the Scene and cordoned off the Area to prevent looters from taking advantage of the situation to loot.

Muhammed added that the police further contacted fire Service department who arrived the scene and put off the fire with the help of local volunteers, although the fire has already caused extensive damage in the building as almost all the corpses at the mortuary were burnt beyond recognition. 

He, however, disclosed that the Cause of the fire was yet unknown but case is under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.
