Breaking: Uneasy calm as Policeman shoots voter dead inside Enugu APC guber candidate’s residence

The governorship and house of assembly elections turned sour in Enugu state, Saturday after a young man was shot dead at Umuida, Enugu Ezike, Igbo Eze North local government area of Enugu state.

The ugly incident took place at the premises of Senator Ayogu Eze, the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Police has confirmed the killing.

However, spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, said they were investigating the incident.

An eyewitness said that there was fracas at Ayogu’s residence as many of his supporters converged in his house and refused to vote because Ayogu’s name was not on INEC list of candidates for the election.

Following the melee that ensued, a policeman, in a bid to avert crisis, shot into the air to scare people and in the process, a young man was shot dead instantly.

“I was inside Ayogu’s compound and we heard  the gun shot.  Those outside said there was fracas and in order to disperse the people, somebody was shot. The youngman  is said to be from Igogoro, Enugu Ezike.  His is name Okwy Odo,” a source said.

It was however gathered that there was mayhem hanging in the air before the bubble burst as some people suspected to be thugs were seen around Ayogu’s residence.

Former chairman of Igbo Eze North local government area, Hon. Bona Onu, had told reporters who monitored the election in the area that some people came firing in the air earlier to scare people away.

“They came here (thugs) and fired into the air to instill fear in the people.  I don’t know what they mean by doing so.  Do they want to create the impression that there was chaos at Ayogu ‘s place, ” Onu querried.

Meanwhile, apart from the killing, reports from various polling centres show that the election was free and fair.

At Amube Ward, Orba, Udenu local government area where Gov. Ugwuanyi voted around 9.35am, voting went on peacefully well.

The governorship candidate of APC, complained bitterly about the way he was ill-treated as his name was not on INEC list.

He called for the cancellation of the polls, accusing INEC tampering with result sheets.

Eze said that his supporters converged at his house as early as 6 am in the morning.

“My supporters came here as early as 6 am.  They were the ones that woke from sleep.  They said they will not vote even when I pleaded with to go and vote.

” They will not allow me to vote.  If they say I should vote, I’ll go and vote,” he said.

At about 11.45, crowd of supporters were at Ayogu’s residence insisting that the election should not hold because their darling governorship candidate, Eze was ill-treated by INEC who though included APC on the ballot paper but did not include his name on INEC
