Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan early Monday morning broke the world record in Women’s 100 meters hurdles event running 12.12seconds to claim gold after she beat Camacho Quinn to second in the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States.
She has now first Nigerian to set world athletics record.
Amusan first ran a blistering 12:12 seconds to shatter the world record of 12:20 set by Kendra Harrison of the United States in the semi-final.
The record breaking feat also enriched Amusan’s purse with $160,000 as bonus from the organisers.
She later soared beyond the record, to wrap-up the final race in 12:06 seconds, which many thought was another record in one night,until the race director adjudged the time to be wind-aided which would not stand.
This latest feat will serve as a big consolation to Amusan after a disappointing Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she narrowly lost the bronze medal to Jamaica’s Megan Tapper, when she placed fourth.
It was also another last day medal for Nigeria, as Commonwealth and Africa record holder, Long Jumper Ese Brume leapt over 7.02 metres, to clinch silver medal, behind rival Maliaka Mihambo of Germany who jumped 7.12 metres for the Gold, while Brazil’s Oro Melo took the Bronze with 6.89 metres jump.
